“Dear Dr Fein,
I took two of your classes, one at CCSF, the other at SFSU, 13 years ago. I’m the second girl from the right in the picture you posted on your website taken in 1999 at CCSF.
Here’s what happened on March 7th on my way home in Parkmerced. I walked passed a group people who apparently were not neighbors. Usually neighbors who hung out in that area were in lounge wear smoking cigarettes and chatting with others, not giving a damn when people walk by. Not this group. This was a group of more than 10 people dressed in street wear with a serious face. The group’s dynamic changed when they heard me walk by. I knew I was trapped, but I had no choice but to keep walking towards my building with my purse tightly gripped under my arm. Before long I heard someone running after me. So I turned around to see who was there and at that very moment, someone put his right arm around my neck. Yes, it was happening to me. So I started screaming, not in a frantic way, but in a steady and loud voice wanting attention. I wanted to make a scene and disturb my neighbors. Before I could counter-attack him, the assailant said “shit” and ran off.
Indeed my neighbors heard me. One of them called the police and the police was confused because someone else was robbed on the next block around the same time!
In the end nothing was robbed from me. This story would turn out completely different if I hadn’t taken your classes 13 years ago.
Thanking you from the bottom of my heart,
Way to go Joanna! You made me proud!
